Grief, Legacy and Creative Remembrance
Grief can’t be fixed - but it can be expressed.
When someone dies, everything changes.
Sometimes it happens slowly, sometimes out of nowhere. Either way, you're thrown into a new reality you didn't choose.
In the beginning, you're just trying to survive. Making decisions you never thought you'd have to make. Planning services. Writing obituaries. Handling logistics, all while in shock.
You do what needs to be done, even when none of it feels real. At first people grieve with you, then the world moves on. People go back to their lives.
You're left in yours - except nothing feels right.
It took years before I could do more than just survive. There was nothing straight or predictable about grief.
Eventually, I picked up a paintbrush - I needed to do something that didn't involve talking, explaining, or pretending I was okay. In my own way I could talk to the canvas.
Art gave me a way to connect: to my daughter, to myself, to the parts of life that still had meaning.
Art didn't take the pain away. It gave it somewhere to go.
You won’t find a formula here. You’ll find creative ways to have a conversation with grief.
I’m sharing what has helped me, with the hope something here might help you too. And if you're not ready yet, that's completely fine. This space will still be here when you are.
