I’ve always loved creative problem solving and art - but after a life-changing loss, everything changed. Grief and creativity became allies. I knew I couldn’t “work through” grief. I had to learn how to live again in a world that holds both devastating loss and new possibilities. Painting became that bridge.
Now, I offer creative spaces where you can explore this same process - whether you’re navigating loss, facing big life transitions, or simply seeking a new way to connect with yourself. You don’t need to be an artist. You don’t need experience. You just need curiosity and an open heart. It all begins with play.
It’s ridiculously simple - painting just makes you feel better and in this crazy world, who doesn’t want to feel better?
Painting isn’t about making perfect art. It’s about the process. With a paintbrush, you can add color, make marks, and shift what’s in front of you. The canvas reflects your choices. It invites curiosity. It holds no judgment. You can try things out, paint over them, and begin again — just like in life.
As you paint, your mind relaxes. You begin to listen inwardly, without needing words. The act of creating helps you notice shifts — both on the canvas and within yourself. Each layer offers a new possibility.
As soon as you start making time for your creative process you’ll start noticing the changes in your life.
It’s all About the Process, not the Product
At Canvas and Connection, we believe that painting is more than just art - it's a pathway to self-discovery and healing. Our workshops are designed to help you discover the transformative power of painting to:
Alleviate Stress and Anxiety: Engage in mindful painting techniques that promote relaxation and mental clarity, and remember the power of play.
Navigate Life's Transitions: Use creative expression as a tool to process changes, including all types of grief and life’s transitions, and embrace new beginnings.
Build a Supportive Community: Connect with like-minded individuals who share a passion for curiosity, creativity, and personal growth.
No prior art experience is necessary - just bring your authentic self and an open heart.
I’m Sharon Cavanaugh - Welcome to Canvas and Connection
Art is an important part of my life. It’s how I think, how I connect with people, and how I find myself. It’s gotten me through some really rough times and it’s my constant go to. It’s also been my career. After college I worked as Medical Illustrator, a designer in marketing department at a hospital, and a freelance graphic designer and illustrator. In 2003 I created Connecticut Art School, teaching art to thousands of children and teens. In August 2024 I had the privilege of selling the school to an amazing person and teacher.
